Sun shone on festival crowds

The sun shone on Burnley Community Festival and helped attract a record crowd who enjoyed a great day out. You can see more pictures here (360k) or a movie here (3.9mb - broadband recommended).

The festival in Queen’s Park, Burnley, on Sunday (Aug 21) saw an estimated 11,000 people of all ages and backgrounds entertained by a mix of live music, arts and crafts, street entertainment, fun and games, family entertainment and much more.

The annual event – the third of its kind – saw a steady stream of visitors throng to the park throughout the afternoon. As well as enjoying the entertainment provided by the festival itself, visitors also could advantage of the rest of the park’s facilities that are there all year round.

A carnival parade of community floats, organised by Brunshaw Action Group, made its way from the festival site, through the town centre and back to the park.

Councillor Colette Bailey, Burnley Council’s Executive member for leisure, said: “It was a fantastic day out for everyone. Once again the festival brought people from all over the borough together for a great day out. We also had visitors from as far apart as Bradford and Ashton-under-Lyme come along and enjoy the festival so its reputation is obviously spreading.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came along and who helped make the festival a great success. I'd also like to thank council staff, particularly from the Green Spaces and Amenities unit, for all their hard work.

"Finally we'd be happy to receive any feedback about the festival and how we can make it better.”

The festival was organised by the council with support from Sure Start, Burnley Community Network, Burnley Enterprise and Mid Pennine Art. Local radio station 2BR broadcast from the main music marquee.

East Lancs Together sponsored a programme given out at the festival. The programme included a questionnaire to help organisers improve future events. All completed questionnaires have been entered into a prize draw to win a mini Apple iPod. The winner will be announced in the next fortnight.

The festival was advertised on Community Safety Television! You could see our advert in McDonalds, the Bus Station café, ASDA, Burnley Hospital outpatients, Tesco or right here!
