Many farmers and workers in developing countries struggle to provide for their families. Poor market access and unfair trade rules often mean that the price they get for their crop does not cover the cost of production. Fairtrade is a rapidly growing international movement which seeks to guarantee a better deal for farmers and workers in the developing world. A product that is Fairtrade certified carries a label, the FAIRTRADE Mark.

How is Works

A product that that carries the Fairtrade Mark has to meet the high standards set by the Fairtrade Foundation, which guarantee that trading between companies and producers is fair, transparent and meets environmental and social standards.

A Fairtrade label is different from the ethical or social policies that many companies have as products that carry the Fairtrade Mark are subject to external inspection and certification by an independent non profit organisation known as the Fairtrade Labelling organisation.

Does it really make a difference to people's lives?

Yes!

When you buy Fairtrade products you ensure that producers in developing countries receive a fair price for their products and efforts, which means that they can pay for the basics of life, such as an education for their children, clean water, decent working conditions, and healthcare.

Buy buying Fairtrade you help to challenge those companies who control world markets and exploit people for profit! You show that that there is an alternative, sustainable, fair way to trade.

It empowers you as a consumer and lets you make the choice to take some responsibility for the role you play when buying products from developing countries.
