Centenary of the Art Gallery at Towneley Hall

28th April, 2008-04-21

Towneley Hall open FREE for this day.

To celebrate 100 years of the oil painting gallery in Towneley Hall the building will be open free to all from 12-5pm on Monday, 28th April, 2008.

Visitors can vote for their favourite painting and view paintings in store on a touchscreen computer.

The gallery was created from top floor bedrooms and opened by the last resident, Lady O'Hagan and her son Lord O'Hagan. To mark the occasion they gave a painting by Sir Augustus Wall Callcott entitled "The Temple of Aescapulus" (Aescapulus was the Greek god of medicine and healing). Callcott is largely forgotten today but he was Keeper of the Royal Collection and was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1837, the year when this work was painted.

Also on display is an exhibition of 100 years of photographs of Lancashire from the Lancashire & Cheshire Union as they are 100 years old.

Towneley Hall is open from 12-5 everyday, closed Friday.
