Improving Burnley park is local fishermen’s angle

Keen anglers have splashed out and donated money to improve a Burnley park.

Burnley and Pendle District Angling Association donated £300 to Burnley Council.

The money was used to install two colourful interpretation panels on a wheelchair accessible fishing platform at Rowley Lake in the Brun Valley Forest Park. 

The panels were designed by a local artist and the research was done by the council’s park ranger Graham Gavaghan.

Red Ensign being flown over Burnley to honour Merchant Navy

The Red Ensign flag will be flown over Burnley Town Hall as part of a national campaign to honour the Merchant Navy.

Burnley Council has once again agreed to take part in the campaign to raise awareness of the role the Merchant Navy has played, and continues to play, in bringing essential goods to Britain.

This Sunday (3rd September) is Red Ensign Day and organisations across the country have been asked to mark it in their own way. Because it falls on a Sunday the flag will be raised over the town hall on Friday (1st Sept) and remain there over the weekend.

National campaign spotlight for Burnley Council's positive work on dementia

A Burnley councillor’s work to champion “Dementia Friendly” approaches is being highlighted in a national campaign by the Local Government Information Unit.

The organisation, which promotes good practice in the public sector, has published a special post on its website focusing on Councillor Margaret Lishman and her involvement in Burnley’s campaign to raise awareness of dementia and its impact on those affected and on those around them.

Traditional crafts and local heritage to be celebrated at Woodland Festival

Where can you meet birds of prey, try your hand at willow weaving, and catch a glimpse of the past with 1745 Jacobite re-enactment?

Towneley Heritage and Woodland Festival, of course.

The free festival will be taking over the park on Sunday, 10th September, with an assortment of family-friendly activities in the historic and atmospheric setting.

Between noon and 4pm, visitors will be able to enjoy a mix of entertainment and educational workshops and even try their hand at making traditional crafts.

Unlock Towneley Hall history during Heritage Open Days

What does a renowned scientist, the last man to be hanged, drawn and quartered in Britain, and an antiques collector have in common?

They all lived at the historic Towneley Hall, home to the Towneley family for almost 500 years and the jewel in Burnley's cultural crown.

Visitors to the hall during the Heritage Open Days weekend, 7-10th September, will uncover fascinating stories about Towneley family members and the history of the hall.  

Burnley ceremony to remember VC heroes

All welcome at important commemoration event

Burnley Council has released details about the next event being held as part of the borough’s programme of ‘respectful remembrance’ in relation to the First World War.

The event will be held on Saturday 2nd September in the town’s Peace Garden, outside the Central Library, from 11am.

The focus will be a commemoration of two Burnley soldiers who were awarded the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest military honour, for their bravery during the conflict.

Family fun on offer at Thompson Park

Ever wanted to try your hand at tomahawk throwing? A special family extravaganza being held in the beautiful surroundings of Thompson Park this weekend will give you the chance.

Residents and visitors are invited to join in an action-packed afternoon on Sunday, 20th August, between noon and 4pm.

The programme of activities will have something for everyone including archery, small fairground rides, music, food stalls, face painting and craft activities.
