Nation’s favourite bear pays a visit to Burnley Town Hall

Members of staff at Burnley Town Hall have been treated to a very special visit by a fluffy yellow guest in support of Children in Need.

The BBC’s very own Pudsey Bear took time out of his packed fund-raising schedule and dropped by the town hall on Monday, 17^th October.

The famous bear had a busy day strolling around Burnley town centre with his collection bucket raising funds for this year’s appeal.

Visits to the town hall and local businesses were organised by the town’s Boots store.

Central library transformed as Burnley receives European flag of Honour

Burnley’s central library had the atmosphere of a Parisian boulevard on Saturday 15^th October, as the venue was transformed into a European cultural centre to celebrate the latest award to be given to the town.

French tricolours flew alongside the Union Jack, an accordionist played French style music, and there were Madeleine cakes for guests. A French style café, films, exhibitions and even a magic show added to the atmosphere.

Young people in Burnley get a taste of local politics

There were challenging questions, laughs and applause in Burnley Town Hall as young people grilled a panel of council representatives on issues that matter most to them.

More than 30 young people from schools and youth groups across the borough attended an event on Tuesday, 11th October, as part of local democracy week.

Burnley Council leader Cllr Mark Townsend said: “I was very impressed with the enthusiasm and energy of the young people wanting to find out more about what the council does.

Burnley councillors nominated for top national award

A pair of long-serving Burnley councillors has been shortlisted for a prestigious award recognising their work in the community.

Burnley Council councillors Ida Carmichael and Roger Frost are up for accolades at the annual Local Government Information Unit’s Councillor Achievement Awards.

Cllr Carmichael, who has spent 18 years on the council for Whittlefield with Ightenhill, has been shortlisted in the District Councillor of the Year category.

Driver fined for not having private hire licence

A man has been fined after being spotted driving a taxi in Burnley without a private hire licence.

Abdul Majeed, of Albert Street, Brierfield, pleaded guilty driving a private hire vehicle without a current licence, and guilty to using a vehicle without insurance. He was fined £120 and ordered to pay £200 costs and a £30 victim surcharge by Burnley magistrates. He also had eight penalty points put on his driving licence.

Private landlords fined for failing to licence rented property

Two private landlords have been fined more than £700 for failing to properly licence a property in Burnley they rented out.

Burnley Magistrates’ Court was told that Christopher James Davies and Natalie Davies owned the house in Carter Street and had rented it out since December 2015.

The house is in Gannow, a selective licensing area where rented properties must be licensed by Burnley Council. Selective licensing has been introduced into certain areas by the council to help improve the management of private rented properties and improve the surrounding area.

Public meetings to outline proposed boundary changes

A series of public meetings have been organised to explain more about proposed changes to Parliamentary boundaries across the country.

The meetings in the North West, set out below, are part of a nationwide public consultation over plans to re-draw the areas of the country MPs represent.

Burnley medieval masterpieces to be shown in London exhibition

A set of exquisite medieval vestments, which are part of the collection at Towneley Hall, has been loaned to the world-renowned Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum to form part of a major national exhibition.

The pair of Whalley Abbey vestments will feature at the museum’s autumn exhibition Opus Anglicanum: Masterpieces of English Medieval Embroidery.

Children issue 'road safety' message to motorists

Councillors and residents join forces to call for safer driving on Moseley Road

When school children living on Moseley Road in Burnley showed Christine White some drawings they had done about road safety, she didn’t just say she liked them.

Christine, who was elected as a local councillor earlier this year, took it as a spur to step up a local campaign.

She arranged for the drawings to be turned into large posters to remind motorists that the speed limit on the road is 20 miles per hour.
