Major milestone in Burnley’s vision to become a university town

New student accommodation that forms part of ambitious plans to turn Burnley into a university town have been officially handed over to the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).

The 136-bed building in Sandygate provides high-quality accommodation for students attending the University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLan) facilities in the town, supported by space for common rooms, a laundry, and a study/resources room, as well as three units for use as restaurants, cafes or offices.

Council set to approve draft homelessness strategy

Councillors are set to approve a draft strategy that sets out how Burnley Council will help tackle homelessness in the borough over the next five years.

A report to the council’s executive recommends it approves the draft homelessness and rough sleeping strategy 2020-25 when the committee meets next week.

It also asks for approval to launch a six-week consultation, at a date to be agreed, to allow people and organisations to have their say before any final strategy is agreed.

The strategy is made up of three key components:

Alleygate

As part of a process of simplifying the orders under which alley gates are managed, the council is proposing that all existing and future schemes will be brought under one, borough-wide, Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO).

The move is an administrative one, removing the need to individually renew each scheme at the expiry of its 3-year term, and ensuring that the legal aspect of the program remains as streamlined and efficient as possible.
