Burnley Christmas Festival will start the festive season

Release date:
Wednesday, 9 November, 2016

The festive season will officially start in the Burnley town centre with a two-day festival, culminating in the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights.

The much-anticipated Burnley Christmas Festival will take place on 19th and 20th November and include an array of family-friendly festive attractions.

On Saturday 19th November, the town centre will be turned into a frosty winter wonderland with a dazzling ice sculpture trail and a live interactive ice carving wall in Market Square.

Each one of ten sculptures will feature a letter, all together hiding a festive word or a phrase. Visitors will be able to collect the letters and solve the puzzle to be entered into a free prize draw.

The sculptures are carved by the award winning ice sculptors from Glacial Art, who have worked in various films and TV series including Game of Thrones.

Programmes for the event will have a tear off slip for the prize draw, which can be handed in to 2BR on the day.

Added to the mix of entertainment, there will also be a caricaturist creating cheerful pictures of visitors.

Burnley Youth Theatre will be kicking off the second day of festivities (Sunday, 20th November) with a Showcase performance and a preview of their Christmas production of the Wizard of Oz.

Shoppers and visitors will be able to wander through a market and craft fairin Curzon Street. Burnley Market traders will have their stalls filled with gifts and treats for all the family.

There will be face painting available to help get children in the Christmas spirit and keep them entertained.

At 5pm there will be an all-singing, all-dancing spectacular festive Christmas Lights switch-on show followed by a fantastic fireworks display. Father Christmas himself will do the honours and turn on the twinkling festive lights.

2BR will be appearing live on both days in Market Square, helping to get people in the festive spirit.

Catherine Price, Burnley town centre manager, said: “I’m really excited that to mark the start of the festive season in Burnley, we are having a fantastic weekend of events, culminating in the switching on of the Christmas lights and a superb firework display.

“This year we are focusing on festive fun for all the family with attractions all around the town centre.”

Christmas late night shopping in Burnley town centre starts on Thursday 24th November. On Thursdays, shops will be open until 8pm.

Shoppers will benefit from free car parking during this time at Charter Walk car parks.

On the last three Thursdays (8th, 15th and 22nd December) all Burnley Council operated car parks will be free to shoppers from 5pm.
