Don't lose your chance to vote - make sure you're registered

Release date:
Tuesday, 6 July, 2021

People living in the borough of Burnley are being encouraged to keep a sharp eye for an important letter coming through their letterboxes in the next couple of weeks that will help ensure they don't lose their voice on decisions that affect them.

The annual canvass ensures that Burnley Council can keep the electoral register up to date, identifying any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so. They would then be able take part in any future elections.

Letters will be delivered to every household in the borough and it’s vital that residents read them and follow the instructions if they want to vote in future elections.

Every household will receive one of two letters - one where the householder ONLY needs to respond if anything has changed, and the other where legally the householders MUST reply.

Alison Stirling, the council’s elections officer, said: “It’s important that residents keep an eye out for correspondence from Burnley Council so we can make sure we have the right details on the electoral register for every address in the borough. Please make sure you read the letter carefully and follow the relevant instructions."

People who have moved recently are particularly encouraged to look out for the letters from Burnley Council and check the details.
