Council leader thanks local postmen and women for delivering a first class Christmas

Burnley Council leader Mark Townsend visited the town’s sorting office to see first-hand the operation of delivering Christmas post and to pass on early season’s greetings to its dedicated, hardworking staff.

Councillor Townsend was shown around the office by delivery office manager Simon Figg and was introduced to the postmen and women who will be pulling out all the stops to sort and deliver mail in the busy Christmas period.

“Together an Active Burnley” to make residents healthier

A strategy which sets out a five-year vision to increase physical activity has been approved by Burnley councillors.

Burnley Council’s executive was told that more than 40% of adults in the borough are not sufficiently active which contributes to two-thirds of adults being classed as overweight or obese. Almost one-in-four children in Pennine Lancashire are classed as obese when they reach secondary school age.

The executive approved the Burnley Physical Activity and Sport Strategy 2018-23 when it met last night (11th December).

Garden waste collections extended to allow autumn clear-out

Burnley Council’s garden waste collections are being extended to allow householders to get rid of any “green” autumnal waste such as leaves and other garden “debris”.

The council’s fortnightly garden waste collections usually come to a temporary stop at the end of November as gardening generally takes a winter break and demand for the service isn’t as high.

Pioneer Place leisure development moves to next stage

Burnley Council’s executive has recommended that the council invest in a major leisure development at Curzon Street. A final decision on whether to back the scheme will take place at a meeting of the full council on 19th December.

The scheme is to be known as Pioneer Place. The development would involve the relocation of Reel Cinema from Manchester Road. A supermarket is expected to move to the existing cinema site.

Council to build student accommodation to boost 'university town' plans

Burnley Council is set to develop a purpose-built student accommodation facility in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and Barnfield Investment Properties, if councillors approve a proposal being put forward by the council’s executive committee.

The development will cost approximately £9 million. Under the plans, the council will receive an income from rent, and UCLan will run the facility on the council’s behalf.

Get into your local park and get active

Burnley Leisure has accessed £10,000 of Awards For All funding to deliver an innovative project to engage young people in outdoor activities as a way of improving their mental health.

Burnley, in line with national trends, is currently seeing rising mental health issues, particularly in primary school children.

Based in Thompson Park, Burnley, Getin2 Active Parks is an exciting opportunity to provide an engaging programme of educational outdoor activities.

Light up the night sky in Burnley

People are being invited to “come on a journey into the night sky” and light up Burnley town centre.

Burnley Light Night will take place on Saturday 8th December when the town centre will be lit up by a parade of hand-made lanterns.

People of all ages are being invited to take part in lantern-making workshops, and then show off their creations in the parade.

The parade was held last year as part of the annual Christmas lights switch-on, but it proved so popular that organisers this year decided to hold it as a stand-alone event.
