PLanT more trees, please!

We hear about deforestation in the Amazon rainforest and the jungles of Borneo, but did you know that Britain was one of the first countries to cut down its’ forests?

Following the last ice-age, Britain was covered in one great forest of Oak, Elm, Lime and Birch trees which stretched from coast to coast. But now, after 6,500 years of clearance for agriculture and timber production and development, 88% of our forests are gone ☹

Here in Burnley only 8% of land is covered with trees and woodland and in Pendle it is just 4%.

We know that trees are important because they give out oxygen absorb carbon dioxide and create habitat for wildlife. So, to help stop climate change and create more habitat for wildlife we need to plant more trees!

The new Pennine Lancashire Treescapes Project (PLanT) will be planting 21,000 trees to create 25 new micro-woodlands in Burnley and Pendle between now and March 2022. It would be great if you and your family could help.

We will be organising community and school planting days, so look out for information from your school or search ‘Burnley trees’ and you will be able to find out the dates and places where tree planting is taking place.

We look forward to seeing you!
