Rosehill with Burnley Wood

Rosehill with Burnley Wood is in the centre of Burnley borough. It contains the neighbourhoods of Burnley Wood to the east, and Rosehill to the west.

Burnley Wood has been the subject of a large scale housing regeneration programme. Some streets of terraced housing have been cleared, and new family homes built.

This area is home to “the jewel in Burnley’s crown” - Towneley Hall and the surrounding park which comprises 180 hectares of landscaped parkland.

Key statistics:

Rosehill with Burnley Wood has a population of 5,782 (2011 census figures) – a decrease of 13.1% since the 2001 census. This is the biggest decrease in population in Burnley in the last ten years. The housing work that has gone on in Burnley Wood was in large part a response to that social trend, and means that new people are now moving back into the area, and investing and setting up homes.

The proportion of terraced housing in the ward is relatively high. However the proportion of terraced properties is decreasing whilst semi-detached properties in particular seem to be growing.

The average age of Rosehill residents is 39.6 years. There are slightly more residents aged 45-64 compared to most other wards.

97% of residents are white/ white British.

57% of residents are employed, which compares with a borough wide employment rate of 58%. There has been an increase in number of people claiming benefits in this ward, though this has not been so high an increase as in the borough overall.

Reported crime in Rosehill fell by 25% between 2010-12, and anti-social behaviour by 31%. There were significant decreases in burglary and vehicle crime.

77% of residents do not consider themselves limited by their health problems. But just 43% of Rosehill and Burnley Wood people rate their health as very good. Life expectancy is 73.8 years for men, and 78.4 years for women.

Spurred on by the completion of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in 1801, back to back cottages and mills begain to develop around Lane Bridge and Finsley Gate. Coal mining activity and the building of millis in the mid nineteenth century further stimulated demand for housing for workers.
