History
In early October 2003 Parks Service successfully completed construction works on the provision of a £235,000 skate park.
This project was funded largely from European funding and involved extensive community consultation involving local residents, the Friends of Thompson's and Queen Park, skate board enthusiast, park users and interested members of the community. This particular development, part of Council's long term strategic enhancement programme known as "Teenzones" was aimed specially at improving recreational facilities for teenagers.
The project has received many accolades from the local community and is proving very popular with young people.
The skate park's facilities include a Quarter Pipe, Flatbank, Driveway/jump box, Grind Obstacles, beginners ramps, new bench seating and Litter receptacles. Security fencing and a "free skating area" have also been provided .
CCTV has also been installed to provide additional security for the park. The area is also regularly patrolled by Council Park Ranger Service.
Since opening a Skate Park Users Group has been established to assist in providing additional input and planning advise to Council staff. It is envisaged that this group will work along side Council to ensure that the facility is well utilised and kept up to date with changes in skate boarding trends. This group will also be provided with help from Council staff and the Friends Group on improving facilities on the site.
