Volunteers make a vital contribution to the success of Burnley’s parks and green spaces.
The partnerships between park friends groups and the Council has helped to transform Burnley’s parks by improving facilities, organising events and activities and creating a strong sense of community ownership and pride.
Some friends groups already run volunteer groups in their park, other parks don’t yet benefit from volunteers help.
Burnley’s ‘Volunteer in Parks’ programme aims to increase the opportunities for people to contribute to improving Burnley’s parks and green spaces.
The VIP programme has identified four key areas for volunteers:
· Horticulture: establishing/supporting gardening groups in each of the six heritage parks.
· Woodland Management: Extending the work of the existing woodland volunteer grounp that meets weekly and linking up with Trees for Burnley
· Bee Keeping: Working with Offshoots bee keepers to help manage bee hives located in parks and greenspaces around Burnley
· Park Ranger Volunteers: Helping the park ranger service with events and activities and helping to look after individual sites such as small neighbourhood parks
