If you are considering buying a listed building, it is worth bearing in mind the following points:
It is strongly recommended that potential buyers seek clarification that any relevant works have been granted listed building consent. If a listed building is purchased and works have been undertaken without the benefit of listed building consent by previous owners, the Council can instigate listed building enforcement action on the current owner irrespective of whether they were responsible for the works.
If a listed building is purchased with an intention to extend or remodel the internal layout (ie removal of walls, fireplaces or staircases and insertion of new doorways and partitions) it is advised that you discuss your proposals with the Council in the first instance through the pre-application enquiry service.
